Week 2 Student Self Portraits
Wow! You created some awesome self portraits this week. This it one assignment that I would like you to keep working on for the duration of the class. If/when you get something worth sharing, just include it with your images for the weekly critique.

Good Question
Hi Steve,
I wanted to ask..if some of the pictures I've taken previously apply to an assignment would it be ok to use them or would it be better to take new ones for the class?
Thank you,
Cheryl
Hi Cheryl
Good Question!
I would first try and capture something good this week. I think the pressure to find and shoot something that will work is a good thing. If it is a day or two before class and you have not gotten anything good, then look through your archives for something that meets the assignment.
Goal: You are trying to deliberately change the way you look through the viewfinder. It is less about showing something awesome during the critique...although doing both would be good!
Hope this helps

Digital Photography 101 class offered in Strong
MSAD #58 Adult & Community Education to offer Digital Photography
STRONG -- MSAD #58 Adult & Community Education will be offering a 6 week Digital Photography 101 course beginning on Monday, January 31, 2011. The class is designed for beginner and intermediate photographers and will be held Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Strong Elementary School (art room) with instructor Steve Mitman. The cost of the course is $75 per student.
Classes will include: instruction on photographic and compositional techniques, a weekly shooting assignment, and a critique/sharing component. The intent of this class is to help each student become a better photographer. The class is structured so that each photographer, a beginner or more experienced, will benefit from the lessons, shooting assignments and weekly feedback sessions.
Requirements: Students will need a digital camera. Any type of digital camera from a point and shoot to a DSLR is acceptable. Access to a computer and editing software (which comes with most digital cameras) is necessary to edit and process photos at home.
Instructor Steve Mitman has over 35 years of experience in making photographic mistakes and learning from them. He has a BFA from Michigan State University and currently teaches art to elementary and middle school students in Strong. As a freelance photographer, his work can be seen in the Original Irregular Newspaper, the Daily Bulldog and in various blogs on the internet.
For more information, or to register for this course, call Kirsten at the Office of Adult and Community Education at 678-2455 no later than January 27. No walk-ins please.

Strong School Studio Art Light Drawings
This project requires a very dark room. We used tarps, black construction paper and paint shirts to plug all the light leaks we could. Light drawing also requires a DSLR, a tripod and a long exposure time (5-15 seconds). Using flashlights, glow sticks, candles, cell phones and miscellaneous other hand held lights, students 'draw' in the air. The light trail is recorded on the camera's sensor as a 'line'. Unfortunately Studio Art class is not very long this year and 2 students were absent. We should do this activity again. Well done everyone. -Mit
